The variety of shows in Las Vegas runs the gamut - from small room shows featuring magic or comedy to big room shows such as Blue Man Group, Cirque du Soliel, Cher, Bette Midler, etc. When my wife and I decided to go to Las Vegas, we looked at what shows were most affordable and the best value. We would like to give you an idea of both big and small.
There are 10 or more magic-type shows in Las Vegas. We attended three different shows, and all three were difference in size, style and presentation. There are two daytime magic shows, Mac King appears five days a week at Harrah's, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., and Nathan Burton appears at The Flamigo Hotel at 4 p.m. Both offer comedy magic shows. Mac King performs solo, using humor and audience participation. We had an extremely good time and laughed a lot. Nathan Burton is a traditional magician doing fast-paced illusions, and shares his stage with two other performers, a comedian juggler of bowling balls, and a gentleman who takes four audience members, put them in masks and does a routine with them, which is really indescribable and also very entertaining.
The third magic show we attended was Penn and Teller, and although good, was the most disappointing. They have been doing this show for six years, and in some ways it did not seem fresh. The daytime shows are value priced. Tickets can be free to as little as $29.95, depending on purchase of a drink or the buffets.
At the Golden Nugget in downtown Vegas we attended the Gordie Brown Show. Mr. Brown is a talented singer, impressionist and musician. He has hundreds of celebrity voices he can do, great stage presence, and it was a truly enjoyable show. Gordie Brown was the opening act for Celene Dion when she did her North American tour last year.
BIG SHOWS
There are 7 Cirque du Soliel shows running in Vegas. The original and longest running of these shows is Mystere at Treasure Island Casino. Mystere has been running 16 years. It is also the most affordable of the Cirque du Soliel shows, with a top ticket price of $109.
This show is the most unique and awe-inspiring experience we had in Vegas. It is very surreal and is a true circus to the 10th degree, including a clown, pole climbers, trapeze artists, aerialists, feats of strength, not to mention the baby and the snail. Nothing but raves for this show.

The Blue Man Group Show at the Venetian is something entirely different. Hugely entertaining, including some surprising audience participation, beyond that of the splash zone, and aside from simple entertainment may also raise the question of just what it means to be human.
If the time allows, take a gondola ride through the canals of Venice in the Venetian Hotel. My wife and I celebrated our 27th anniversary and fell in love all over again. Salvatore, our gondolier, sang us love songs along our way under the constant evening sky, and also very reasonable for $20.
FOOD IN LAS VEGAS
Dining in Vegas runs the gamut from inexpensive buffets to gourmet dining. Once again, be sure to check for coupons and discounts through the hotel casinos in order to get the best deal possible.
I would like to thank Emily Burton, Matt Guidish, Stephanie Capellas, Jeff Lovari, Amy Carlson and Laura Foley for their hospitality and graciousness.
