1. “The Simpsons” made its debut as a standalone show on Dec. 17, 1989, and along the way the yellow family has taken over pop culture. Which should make it easy to have a “Simpsons” night, if you’re looking for something to do this weekend. Play “Simpsons” Monopoly, Clue or Uno, watch DVDs of the TV show or movie, serve “Duff” beer, or whatever else you can think of.

2. There’s just one big movie opening this week, and it’s a huge one (though its star is tiny): “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first in a new trilogy based on JRR Tolkien’s epic book. “The Hobbit” is rated PG-13 and is directed by Peter Jackson, who directed the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

3. Sunday is National Chocolate-Covered Anything Day, one of the best holidays of the year. Mmm, chocolate. … You can make hot chocolate or chocolate chip cookies, eat chocolate candy or ice cream, or celebrate any way you’d like.

4. Still don’t have all your holiday shopping done? You might want to hit the stores this weekend. Check the newspaper for sales and coupons.

5. If you’re looking for a cheap way to entertain your family, there’s nothing better than driving around to look at Christmas lights. Check the newspaper for a guide to lights, or just drive and enjoy!
