Recently, several parents asked what they should do when their child comes home with a note from school, indicating poor behavior. The first step is to talk to your child and hear his story. Listen closely, without judgement, assumptions or taking sides. Neither defending nor admonishing your child is helpful before understanding the whole story, and determining the cause. Many times a punishment or disciplinary action is not needed because action has been taken at school, or it was a misunderstanding which caused the misbehavior. In this one particular case where a mom of a 5 year old described her son’s behavior, she realized that he was following directions from his last year’s teacher, and was confused with the new rules. Children need to be taught as they go. Some need more concrete information than others, but all need to be taught through the manner in which they can understand. Understanding each particular situation will help you teach your child learn what he needs to know, and how to get his needs met. Read the full article “Dealing with a child’s problems at school“.
