Roofing Tip: Cool Roofing

undefinedIn recent years, the installation of "cool roofing" has become "the single largest trend in the roofing industry," according to the Allied Roofing Company. The company states that the trend is due to "increasing population, environmental concerns, energy shortages, and vastly improved life cycle costing."

In essence, a cool roof is a white or light-colored roof that reflects heat as opposed to absorbing it. The Santa Ana roofing company states, "In order to comply with Energy Star and the Cool Roof Rating Council standards, the minimum reflectivity needs to be at least 70 percent. Only continuous white or shades of white, such as off-white or cream color can meet these reflectivity standards."

Other benefits of cool roofing the company says include reduced air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions by lowering energy usage. Cool roofs also reduce air temperatures inside buildings with and without air conditioning.
