If You Don't Like It, Don't Read It

After my last couple posts a few months back, I received yet again more "hate mail" from readers so I decided to take a break and focus on my pregnancy.

Now, that my adorable little girl is here, I am back at taking a stab at writing. So here's the deal... for all the readers out there (who actually aren't even members of my blog) who feel they need to take the time to write me mean messages and emails because they don't agree with me over a skirt or my opinion on hair color, please don't waste your energy angrily typing on your keyboard! Frankly, I don't care for your negativity. I actually smirk and forward the mean emails to my dad to laugh at! I'm just a girl who loves clothes and wants to write about fashion.

And remember... if you don't like, don't read it. Wouldn't you rather direct your energy towards blogs that make you happy? So, please just enjoy!

LOVE Plato's Closet!

Do you ever walk into a consignment shop and immediately feel grossed out by all the different smells and unorganized clothes?... because I do. That's the one reason I have never been a consignment girl until now. My husband suggested we poke our heads into a place called Plato's Closet in Jacksonville, FL, to find my favorite Hollister jeans for less. When I walked into the large store full of designer scarves, Vera Bradley's, and A&F polo's, I have to admit that I felt at home.

For one thing, the mall always overwhelms me, not to mention I hate teasing myself by just "window shopping"... I mean, what fun is staring at clothing I can't afford? That's why Plato's Closet is my new favorite girl toy store because it's all affordable and full of current fashions from wedges, leather jackets, and costume jewelry. Checking out the rows of never ending denim, I managed to find about 7 pairs of Hollister jeans in my size and I purchased 4 of them... for $80! Do you realize that a normal pair of Hollister jeans in the actual Hollister store start at $69? And I just bought 4 pairs for $80! That's unbelievable if you ask me.

The deals in Plato's are ridiculous. I didn't check all the brands and prices, but along with Hollister jeans for $22 a pair I did see Abercrombie, Express, Aeropostale, and DKNY. Why buy full price denim ever again?

Not to mention, they are one of the only consignment shops I know that give you cash on the spot for your clean gently used clothing. My husband and I consigned a box of his old tee's and a few of my dresses and Plato's gave us $99 cash right there! Plus, they give you a shopping discount card that eventually gets you 20% off your purchase. I'm still in shopping awe! Check out the latest trends and look for a Plato's Closet near you at Platoscloset.com.

I'm Obsessed...

I've always been a fan of Australian pop queen Kylie Minogue's music, but never a fan of her fashion until recently. Now granted, I would never wear this ensemble together (short shorts and a leather jacket with 6 inch booties) because it's a little skanky even for me... and I love going gaudy! But while shooting her new music video in London not too long ago, Kylie looked smoking hot for a cancer surviving woman in her 40's.

I've become so obsessed with Kylie's heart moto jacket that it's got me losing sleep at night! I love the quilted pattern with the black and white patches, the zippers up the sleeves are classic rocker chic, and my favorite part of course is the big red heart on the front!

There are so many plain black leather jackets out there but this one is so different because of the eye catching red heart. Any girl would be sure to get noticed in a crowd wearing this jacket, if I could only figure out who made it! The only qualm I have with the jacket is that on the back is a giant white peace sign and I absolutely hate peace signs. Looking sexy is all in a days work for Minogue, the pop diva looked hot in this pic from www.imnotobsessed.com.

Fashionable Moments: Emily Blunt

Omg.com had this pic of actress Emily Blunt at a recent NYC movie premiere wearing a gorgeous red floral lace Michael Kors dress she paired with a tan clutch, matching heels, and a thin tan belt. This look is completely timeless and the bright red color looked amazing against Emily's fair skin.

Since I first saw her on the silver screen, I've admired Blunt's fashion choices. I remember writing about the actress in a fashion article for my school paper when I was a senior in high school. And, I just saw Emily on The Ellen Show the other day looking completely chic and style forward wearing a form fitting Victoria Beckham number.

I think the 29-year-old is one of the prettiest and funniest actresses in Hollywood right now. From The Devil Wears Prada to The Five Year Engagement, Emily Blunt is comical and stylish in every way.

Star Studded Style Event... But Minus the Style

Stella McCartney recently held a star studded style event in West Hollywood... but where was all the style?

Kristin Stewart and Ginnifer Goodwin were the only two actresses that People's Style Watch site had photos of at the event. And if those were the only two "A- list celebs" that Stella McCartney could get to attend, then well she doesn't know real celebs now does she.

Where were Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, Kate Hudson, Liv Tyler, and anyone else in Hollywood who has style? I'd be seriously embarrassed if I were the British designer to have Stewart and Goodwin show up to a major event with my name on it. First of all, neither would have even gotten an invite due to the fact that neither can dress (and this was a style event) nor act for that matter (my chinchilla would have done a better job as Bella in all 23,000 Twilight movies).

If you don't believe me, just take a look at these pics above from People's Style Watch site. At first glance, I did an, "OMG! Hahaha Kristin looks so stupid!" What was she thinking going out in public like this? She looks like a hungover rocker who just mugged a Catholic school girl.

And Kristin's hideous outfit doesn't make Goodwin's poor taste in clothing, accessories, or hair any less wrong. Goodwin's dress is pure ugly and the clutch matches nothing, not to mention she is still sporting that ridiculous Peter Pan hair do. Helloooo, you look like a boy!

For the designer's sake, I really hope there were other actual A-list celebs in attendance. If these two are the new faces of the Stella McCartney brand, then I guess the designer is just begging to go out of business.

Fashionable Moments: Jessica Alba

When it comes to holiday attire, I'm very big on, "Go get dressed real nice and don't look frumpy." But this pic from Omg.com of Jessica Alba and her family from Easter was fashionably inspiring to me.

Jessica looked cute and casual in a white shirt under a fantastic must have gray sweater that she paired with pale blue skinny jeans and neutral colored flats. The mother of two topped off her look with a great big comfy scarf and an orange crossover bag that popped against the other muted tones she was sporting.

As for her family, husband Cash looked quite relaxed in loose fitted pants and a white long sleeve shirt while daughter Honor donned a cute bright floral Easter dress with flats. This is something I can see my future family wearing out on a day like that. My husband is very good with letting me dress him for holidays and I've always taken a relaxed approach with his attire being he has a "laid back Hawaiian" personality. I usually send him out in a button down from the Gap or a Ralph Lauren polo while the "city girl" in me opts for a dress and heels almost 100% of the time.

Quite honestly, I'm impressed with Alba for once. She is one of the very few celebs who I feel is over exposed... let's face it, the girl can't act and she looks like a toddler. But here, I am being drawn into her outfit and how much a statement it made without even trying. I may have to revamp my wardrobe to a more relaxed and chic one rather than always reaching for a dress. Touche, Jessica... you got me this time.

She Doesn't Got It Going On

Kate Bosworth is still suffering in the style category. This pic from People's Style Watch shows the actress (who is still famous though I'm not sure what she has been in since Blue Crush) who looks completely dowdy and washed out in this outfit that is way too big on her thin sickly frame.

I think the pale pink blouse would have looked better if she wore a pair of jeans instead of that loose fitted skirt with all those buttons. This skirt ruins the entire look. And what is with hamster size purses? What could she possibly have in there? I've never used anything that can't fit my wallet, makeup case, Purell, sunglasses, iPod, phone, keys, aspirin, cardigan, and dog treats!

To top it off, she wore a small brown wedge sandal with an ankle strap which did nothing for her. I don't get this look. This entire look is something I'd expect from Jennifer Garner who thinks that just because she landed Ben Affleck she doesn't have to try and look good anymore. But hey, I guess some guys don't like pretty girls!

Well, Bosworth is still my top most unfashionable person in the world. I don't even know if "How Do I Look" or "What Not to Wear" could help this girl. I continuously hope that the girl will get some style, be able to keep a guy, and live happily ever after, but unfortunately she is stuck in a rut of poor style taste.

Fashionable Moments: Natalie Portman

Spring is definitely in the air for Natalie Portman. The Oscar winner was photographed in Paris wearing a darling little black dress with her hair up in a bun. The best part of the look, though? The chic trench coat of course!

This pic of Natalie from Popsugar.com, shows how stylish the star actually is. A simple trench can change an entire outfit from dowdy to glamorous. I don't know if this trench is Burberry or Target, but price doesn't matter one bit. Either way, this coat does its job of adding that extra dose of luxury to her look.

Think about all the ways you can wear a trench... a rainy day, a windy day, a chilly day, simply just because it looks great on you... all valid reasons. People seem to think finding the right fitting trench in their budget is a difficult task but I assure you, it's not.

Sure, who wouldn't love to own a $1,500 Burberry trench? If I won the lottery I would own one. But as a "Style Lioness" I have to be reasonable and that's why my favorite go to store for trench's is Old Navy. Made well, under $40 every time, and always a variety of colors, Old Navy is a fan favorite when it comes to dressing your best for less. After all, owning a trench is a must have key piece for your wardrobe.

Michelle vs. Nicki...

This morning I came across this pic from People's Style Watch site of actress Michelle Williams wearing the same black leather Valentino dress as Nicki Hilton. Honestly. I've always found both of these women extremely unfortunate looking (and that's me saying "ugly" the nice way), so it's hard for me to see who wore it better. But I think it's obvious that even the Hilton heiress rocked this frock. Williams looks like a 12-year-old boy in everything she wears... even if it is Valentino!

If I had the kind of fashion power that Valentino had, I would never let Michelle Williams wear any of my pieces. This past award season, Williams has made everything he's designed look terrible. Valentino should be dressing real women's bodies like Cameron Diaz or January Jones. If he's going to dress Williams then he mind as well put Matt Damon in a gown. But I digress!

Michelle didn't even choose the right pair of heels to wear with this piece. Why do stylists put women in nude heels? I know that it is supposed to elongate the leg but in my opinion, it winds up making women who aren't olive skinned toned or black look sickly and colorless. I would have liked to see the actress in a bright shoe like blue, red, or yellow at least. Nicki on the other hand looks sexy in this dress with her wavy blond hair down and I don't mind the bright clutch with the ugly shoes that don't match.

Oohh well. Another day, another style war... that's life.

Pink Hair... No Thank You

You don't have to be a celebrity to try crazy hair colors from Katy Perry's rainbow locks to now Willow Smith's pink head of hair, (pic from Seventeen.com). But do you really want to try ridiculous hair colors?

At least we know Katy Perry is an adult and eccentric to begin with, but Willow Smith has to be, what... thirteen, if that? And she is already dying her hair stupid colors. She doesn't even look cute, I'm not a fan of celebs dying their whole heads a bright and unnatural color. I'm not just picking on Smith either. Even when Perry went all blue last spring at an award show, I wasn't a fan.

I may not be a hair dresser or a mother of a teenage girl but I never once asked my parents to try ugly hair colors. I have two teenage cousins who never once wanted to try a whacky color. In high school, I tried to go blond but being a natural brunette it came out red. Give me some credit, at least I didn't try blue, green, or pink. As someones who appreciates style, don't let me fool you, I definitely judge at times. And when I see people with pink hair walking around, I think one thing... starving for attention!

To a New Beginning

As a writer, people are always trying to say what you wrote is theirs or steal your ideas before you can even write them down. As of today, my blog name, "Defining Style," was so-called "taken" and I was devastated... truly I was. I had that domain name and column title for years. But, when it expired yesterday... literally just yesterday... some new girl in town decided to steal it from right under my nose.

So I decided to become, "The Style Lioness!" Sure, it might sound corny at first, but in reality don't lions kick ass?! Oh ya they do! Fashion is just another jungle where women must fight for the latest fashion finds. And although my beloved website name might be taken, my love of style is still here and more fierce than ever.

I'm still all about defining what style means to you. But, now that I am a mom-to-be and still cautious of how much I spend on my clothes, I'm on the prowl for the latest budget friendly fashion trends. So it got me thinking (and crying)... my blog name is taken, I'm starting a new chapter in my life within a few short months, but I still want to write about fashion... it's who I am deep down. Behold... "The Style Lioness."

"Lovely Honey" is the Shade for Me

While I've always been into fashion, make-up is the one side of style I just don't seem to understand. I may only be in  my early twenties, but I've already tried so many lip glosses and none of them have been good enough to call my purse its home... until yesterday.

A few weeks ago, I was knee deep in a magazine snip-it about Clinique's "Black Honey" lip gloss and the newest shades the make-up brand just introduced to the "Honey" family. If you aren't familiar with the brands legendary color, "Black Honey," its almost a deep purple-black at first sight. But once you apply the gloss, it's quite the opposite and a very surprising light berry color appears on your lips. Being rather new to make-up and sick of spending a fortune on lipsticks, lip glosses, and balms that never work, I decided to head straight to the Clinique counter myself and test out the new shades.

After taking my time, applying each and every gloss, and pouting my lips like supermodel in the mirror at the make-up counter, I eventually came to the conclusion that "Lovely Honey" is the shade for me.  It's easy to apply, not sticky, and has a subtle glossy pink hue that plays up my natural lip color so I still feel like me!

Not to mention the light weight silver packaging the gloss comes in is super chic. I feel like a million bucks when I pull it out of my bag. The above pic is of "Black Honey"and is from Sephora.com where you can find the rest of the shades including "Luscious Honey," "Flirty Honey," "Shy Honey," and "Tender Honey" for $15. Clinique's newest shades are just as iconic as the original. What shade was made for you?

New Dresses for a New Season

Being pregnant, I keep complaining to my husband that nothing fits me. My beloved skinny jeans are a tad bit tight around my waist and even my tees are too snug. What am I supposed to do, wear my bikini for 9 months? With that said, I'm giving myself a $50 budget this month to buy a few things that actually fit. The one and only store I know that my $50 will stretch is Forever 21... and I was right!

The first dress I went searching for was a little black dress, I don't have one and I'll need one now and after my baby is born. The Silky Self-Tie Back Dress for $12.00 is a great choice for summer because it's light weight and has a cute cut-out design in the back.

As for the next dress, I found inspiration from my style icon Princess Kate. Going through the style pages I have on her, I noticed Kate wears mostly blue but does own some red pieces too. That's why the Cutout Back Dress in wine for $11.50 is a great choice for someone who doesn't like red or doesn't want to just jump right into color. The wine color isn't too deep and isn't too bright and for under $12, how could you not want to jump on that offer?

For something more muted and for girls who like basic colors, the Racerback Woven Dress for $12.50 is a great find. I like this simple dress because you wear it dressed up with a moto jacket and heels or down play it with flip flops and a messy bun. Other colors available are aqua and black so you could buy more than one. Cute, baggy, and breathable, this chic dress features an elastic waistband with a sporty racerback design. It might be hard to find the right bra, but who says you have to wear one all the time?

Even the most expensive dress of the bunch won't break your bank. The Casual Chambray Dress for $15.50 is a classic take for a summer dress. It's obviously just a shirt dress with a belt, but it's cute and for under $16,  you can wear this anywhere from Easter to a day at the zoo... not to mention you can play it up with chunky wedges or opt for a more casual look and slip into tan flip flops. I tend to be more on the preppy side and this brings out my "inner popped collar," but still makes me feel like an adult without spending a fortune. All pics are from Forever 21.com.

Fashionable Moments: Reese Witherspoon

I recently found out that Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon is pregnant for the third time and I couldn't be happier for her!

This pic from Omg.com, shows the actress out with her husband wearing an adorable vintage inspired blue and black patterned sun dress that she paired with simple black flats. I especially love how the star wore her hair in a chic bun out of her face with large black sunglasses.

Honestly, I could learn from this picture of Reese. I have been feeling so sick from being pregnant that I can hardly make my way of bed in the morning to even get dressed and here's Witherspoon looking more gorgeous than ever. I guess some of us pregnant gals just aren't meant to have the "glow" everyone is always yapping about. But I suppose it wouldn't hurt to drag myself to my closet and force my body to shimmy into a cute dress too. Damn those pregnant celebs, they make the rest of us normal pregnant girls look lazy.

Pregnant or not, style must go on!

I'm Obsessed...

Your obsession with the new royal princess may have subsided, but mine certainly has not... and probably never will. Just ask my husband who tires to read tattoo mags while I'm like an annoying wasp in his ear telling him to, "Look, look, look at Kate's hat," while I'm shoving Royal Magazine in his face.

I'm still paying attention to every picture, every outfit, and every make-up trend Princess Kate tries. And while my newest style obsession isn't Prince Will's wife, it relates to her. While checking out the newest earrings on Forever 21, I came across what seems to be the cutest pack of earrings I've seen in a long time.

The London Stud Set for $3.80 is the cutest set of studs, pic from Forever21.com. I'm not English but I am Welsh so maybe that's close enough... uhhh, a true Welshman would die if he heard me say that!

And besides... I have been to London so I deserve to wear the cute studs. In fact, riding the double decker bus with my dad at age nine is one of my fondest memories. Now, I can don little double decker bus earrings to remember my London trip.

I know, I know...

I know, I know... it's been awhile since I've last written. There has been so much going on in my life.

Since my last blog entry, my husband and I found out that we are expecting our first child together. So, naturally all of my energy has been devoted to all things baby from stroller testing to assembling the crib to already not being able to wear my normal clothes... not to mention I'm sick all day!

But I promise to my loyal readers, Ms. LaRue, Donna, and mom (just to name a few), that you will soon find that the fashionista you know and love is right back to writing again. Don't be surprised if there is an added bonus of baby talk involved.

Find A Dress With No Stress

I came across an article on Yahoo's Shine site today about shopping for a wedding dress... and it was the most unhelpful article on wedding dresses I've ever read. I'm no Randy from "Say Yes to the Dress," but I know fashion, not to mention I've purchased a wedding gown before. And let me tell you, it wasn't hard!

The article called, "Six Tips for a Beautiful Wedding Gown on a Budget," is irrelevant for women on a budget. I feel these types of articles are meant for wealthy women and not everyone has money. The article suggests that you know your budget which is key, but then goes into ideas like shopping a sample sale (which is chaotic and added stress you don't need) and charging your dress on your credit card.

Wedding dress shows are entertaining but they make shopping for a gown look so hard and now Shine wants to tack on unhelpful tips. Take it from a recent bride, shopping for a wedding gown should be fun and a wonderful experience, below pic from Bridalperfections.com.

Here are 5 honest tips for shopping for your dream gown:

1. Budget is key... stick to it and don't try on anything over your limit

2. Shop local. We don't all have millions of dollars to bring with us to Kleinfelds or Priscilla of Boston (who wants to spend $10,000 on a wedding dress anyway?). At least look at the local businesses first. And don't be fooled... those little shops can get whatever dress you want within your budget from a cheaper vendor. Don't be afraid to ask because if they want your money bad enough they will do anything to help you.

3. Bring ONE person with you, if even that! It's your wedding dress, no one else's so who care's what anybody else thinks of it? If you bring too many people then they will sway you away from you truly want.

4. Try on all types of gowns from mermaid to ball gown. It's the only way you will really see what looks best on your body type. Also, play with elements like lace and pearls... you'll never what you like until you see it on your body.

5. Don't charge your dress to a credit card! Go with cash because you may be able to negotiate the price down on your dress... cash is king. Not to mention, if you pay with your card then you have to pay your credit card back. But if you pay cash, your dress is already paid off in the end. You don't want anymore debt than you already may have from school loans or the other wedding items.

Purchasing my wedding gown was the easiest part of my entire wedding. Am I the only person in the world who found a dress with no stress?

Comfy Mama: Hillary Duff

Who says a tee and comfy pants can't be stylish? Mama to be Hillary Duff makes all things stretchy look fashionable. The celeb appears to be glowing in everything from multiple tees and pants to chic accessories from her Balenciaga bag and various boots.

In this pic from People's Style Watch site, Duff makes pregnant style seem effortless. I like these three looks that Duff has going on, but I especially like the middle pic where the star seems most relaxed. She isn't trying too hard with unnecessary add-ons and too strict articles of clothing. Her hair is long and wavy and she is still using colorful accessories like the bright green necklace in the pic. And those pants must be super relaxing being People's Style Watch photographed her in them three times now.

So many other stars from Jessica Simpson to Mariah Carey were still wearing full on heels and skimpy outfits while pregnant, but not Hillary. She knows that nothing is more important for incubating a life than being comfortable. Luckily for Hillary, she knows how to do it style.

I'm Obsessed...

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but my new guilty pleasure show is Jerseylicious. There's something about that show that cracks me up from their ridiculous nails to the "professional attire" of booty shorts and stripper heels.

If you haven't seen Jerseylicious yet, watch it. It's funny, dramatic, and full of tanned twenty-something-year-old loud mouths with really big hair. My favorite character is hair dresser Tracy, right pic from www.wainscotmedia.com.

If I were a Jersey Girl, I'd want to be like her. She's pretty and funny, but also crazy confrontational and will at any time pull her enemies hair extension right out of their head! Tracey is diabolical and I love it!

I am by nooooo means a Jersey Girl. If you know me personally, you might be able to tell by my big mouth and recent interest in glitter nails that I am the progeny of two Jersey people. Lucky for me (thanks Dad),  my parents moved to CT before I was born and so as I already said, I am by nooooo means a Jersey Girl.

The only person on the show who bothers me is makeup artist Olivia, left pic from gisellestylista.blogspot.com. She wears entirely too much makeup and thinks that leopard is considered high fashion. Two things: her makeup looks like something that prostitutes are going to be sporting in the year 2199 and leopard isn't considered high fashion anywhere you live!

There was one episode where the makeup maven actually bawled over the fact that she had to remove her fake nails. If you ask me, that's priceless television right there.

The entire show reminds me of my mom's sister, Francesca. By no means am I making fun of my aunt, she just literally fits the stereotype of a big haired, long fake nailed, olive skinned, fur coat wearing, fake Louis Vuitton bag toting, pays cash for everything, my husband works in "construction," Jersey Girl. I love my aunt and I love Jerseylicious. There's nothing wrong with big hair and fake nails, but you have to admit it is entertaining.

Can't We All Just Get Along?

I remember when Project Runway's season 1 premiered. I watched it all alone in my room and rooted for Jay McCarroll from day one. I even went on to buy one of his totes after the season ended. But, while watching the series all over again today, I realized how rude everyone was to third place winner Wendy Pepper and it hit me personally.

People take my blog and column way too serious. I've had every form of hate mail out there and it's truly frightening! One reader questioned my belief in God all over the fact that I expressed interest in dressing nice for church. Sorry I wasn't raised to wear a NY Giants jersey with ripped jeans to church. Another reader emailed me about how I didn't deserve to have followers and told me to end my writing career all because I didn't like a jacket that Mick Jagger's daughter wore. Not everyone is going to like the same article of clothing, right?

I didn't realize it until today, but between Kevin, Victoria, Alexandra, Jay, and Kara I don't know how Wendy didn't wish to be eliminated, pic from People.com. I hate to sound childish, but while watching today's marathon I felt really sad for Wendy. Is it that bad to show a little compassion towards other human beings? I may sit here and rip some designer or actress a new one, but I don't wish any pain or hate on anyone... whether I like you or not.

I don't think Jay was all that mean to Pepper. Jay was funny, boisterous, and definitely deserved to win the big prize. But Kara Saun, the washed out wanna be Gucci designer, was such a b**** to Wendy and for what? What was Kara's reasoning for her malevolent behavior? The word "bully" might sound babyish, but Kara bullied Wendy and nobody tried to stop it.

If Kara was trying to prove that coming in second was better than coming in third, she was wrong. If you aren't number one on that show, you aren't anything. That's why Heidi says, "You're out"!... and where is Kara now? She's probably still putting her hair in outdated corn row designs and going to the movies alone.

One thing is for sure, fashion comes and goes, but mean people suck forever!
