The 2009 Glenmoor Gathering of Significant Automobiles at historic Glenmoor Country Club will feature numerous outstanding and unique automobiles Sept. 18-20.
This year the event features “The Automobiles of Edsel Ford” — automobiles whose design he influenced as well as automobiles he actually owned. The 2009 Gathering will also celebrate the 75th anniversary of an American icon with a special display of 1934 Ford hot rods. The concours will also feature a class of “French Fronts” –pre WW 1 automobiles with swoopy front ends. The 2009 concours will also herald the centennial of Alice Ramsey’s milestone trip across the United States in a Maxwell automobile in 1909 by displaying a nearly identical Maxwell that just completed that same crossing this summer.
Serving as the 2009 Grand Marshal is Moray Callum, Executive Director, Ford Americas Design. Mr. Callum has overall responsibility for the design of all cars and trucks designed in Ford’s North and South America studios and guides the design of Lincoln and Mercury products.
Here’s a quick glimpse at some of the top cars that will be on display:
- To recognize Edsel Ford several of the cars he personally owned will be displayed, including his personal 1941 Lincoln Continental cabriolet and two custom-built speedsters—one from 1932, the other 1934. A 1938 Lincoln Brunn limousine and 1934 Ford Brewster town car from the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House collection will also be displayed as well as an original, unrestored 1922 Hispano-Suiza touring car with coachwork by Brunn.
- A wonderful grouping of vintage automobiles including a 1917 Mercer raceabout, 1915 Winton limousine, 1919 Holmes opera coupe and a much-heralded 1911 Oldsmobile Limited seven-passenger touring. The Oldsmobile is original and unrestored, having spent several decades in storage in a Pennsylvania museum collection until it was recently acquired by its current owner.
- Recognizing the design talents of Edsel Ford Sr., there will be many automobiles displayed whose design he oversaw. The original prototype of the Lincoln-Zephyr Continental, built in 1939, will be on display as well as a diverse grouping of classic Fords, Lincolns and Mercurys from the 1920’s, ‘30’s and early ‘40’s.
- Two rare “personality” cars: a 1932 Packard Twin Six roadster purchased new by legendary film star Clark Gable and a 1929 Rolls-Royce Pall Mall tourer originally owned by Howard Hughes during his Hollywood studio heyday.
- Four legendary drag racers will be displayed: a 1949 Packard—the “Flintstone Flyer,” a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette—“Mr. Lucky,” a 1959 Studebaker—the “Flintstone Flyer Too…” and a 1968 Plymouth Barracuda funny car.
- Great European Classics including a 1938 Mercedes Benz 540 K cabriolet with coachwork by Sindelfingen and a 1922 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost tourer with coachwork by Albany.
- A special grouping of early American motorcycles, including a 1911 Indian, 1917 Harley-Davidson J, 1910 Thor, 1925 Excelsior,1916 Cleveland, 1921 Harley Davidson J electric and a super rare, all original, unrestored 1913 Flying Merkel.
- Featured on the club’s front lawn on Sunday will be a special class of World Class Performance Cars, with the emphasis on speed and horsepower! Last year’s field was led by a Bugatti Veyron and included unique Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Saleens, Ford GTs and Dodge Vipers.
- Several “professional automobiles,” including two matched pairs of cars—a 1938 Packard Twelve hearse and flower car and a 1959 Cadillac hearse and limousine. A 1927 Henney hearse and a carved panel 1937 Buick hearse will also be displayed.
