Voters rallied in support of their school system and passed Issue 53, a renewal tax levy so desperately needed by Green Local Schools. The passage of this levy provides the school system some financial relief from possible cuts that would have had a devastating effect on the school system, said levy campaigners.

At the “Election Watch Party” Tuesday night, Superintendent Mike Nutter said, “Tonight this community has taken a stand and has shown what is important to them, our kids, our community, our future. Thank you!

“We will continue to move forward building a stronger school and community,” said Nutter. “I look forward to the school becoming more involved with the community as we move into the future. Great thanks go out to all the voters, our levy committee, our volunteers, our Tri-chairs, our board members, our staff, Mayor Norton, our community and our kids. Ultimately that is what we do this for - our kids.”

“I think the community had become aware of our financial slide in May and have responded to our financial situation, and they voted accordingly,” said Green Board President Bob Campbell. “It showed the schools are communicating more effectively, and the community is starting to have a higher degree of trust then in previous levy attempts.”

“I would like to thank the Green community for understanding the difficult situation we were in,” said board member Dr. Victor Pinheiro. “And also how the community came together to work so hard to make this levy pass.”

“I am proud of the district, the administration, the teachers, and the community for all coming together after such a difficult spring,” said board member Jay Dettorre. “It demonstrates the strength of Green and its commitment to the future of our schools and the students we serve. Thank you to everyone.”

Julie McMahon, on of the Tri-chair committee heads said, “I think my whole involvement revolved around the levy choosing me. When you think of Green you think of the schools. We wanted to move forward with that theme!”

One of the other Tri-chairs, Ken Orihel, said, “To pass the levy so soundly speaks to the commitment of the community to the schools. The first time we got together we picked a theme “A Heritage of Excellence’ as the focal point. That was the focus of the 169 slogan, the great history of education in the community.”

Both McMahon and Orihel said that Mike Nutter’s leadership was instrumental in passing the levy.
