On Jan. 8 a Metro SWAT officer shot Lakemore resident Daniel Tice at his 1569 Martha Ave. home.

Tice was armed and holding his 4-year-old son hostage.

Law enforcement officers negotiated with Tice but he would not come out.

When he went to the basement of the home, officers entered the home on the upper level. Officers found the body of 28-year-old Brandi Tice shot to death, laying on the living room floor.

According to the 911 tape-recorded at 3:56 p.m. a family friend, Janice Wood stated that she had received a call from Tice.

“He said he killed his wife,” Wood said.

At first she said she did not know who it was as she stated he was just screaming.

“I thought he had a wrong number,” she said. “He’s got bipolar. I have known him since he was about 5-years old.”

The 911 dispatcher asked Wood why he would select her to call?

“Because I am a friend of his mother. His mother died last month,” Wood stated.

“She (Brandi) told me before that she wanted to leave him and I told her to be careful because of his mom dying,” Wood said.

Authorities said it was believed that she had told him she wanted a divorce.

Wood said, “He said he had one of his kids with him and that he was not coming out, they would have to kill him.”

Police first tried to take Tice down with a nonlethal beanbag. They were trying to get to the 4-year old.

However, when Tice did not go down he went after his shotgun.

A Metro SWAT officer fired his AR-15 assault rifle, but the weapon jammed. Another Metro SWAT officer then shot at Tice using a 9 mm assault weapon, hitting him once in the head. The officer had fired at least two shots from his 9 mm with one of the bullets ricocheting off the basement's cement-block wall.

Tice was taken to Akron City Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

The 4-year-old was released from Akron Children’s Hospital in good condition. His two sisters were in school at the time of the incident and were intercepted by officers at the bus stop. The children are currently with family members.

Tice is reported to have a history of domestic violence.
