The school district was recently alerted by the Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF) that wording in the school districts’ mission statement is in direct violation of the First Amendment.
The Lake Local Schools’ mission statement was recently published in the August edition of the school’s publication Blue Streak News.
The mission states: “We value responsibility, honesty, respect, integrity, commitment, belief in God and religious freedom, our community, our partnerships, and every person as a unique individual with the ability to acquire and apply knowledge.”
The foundation sent a letter to Lake Local Schools Aug. 26 regarding the phrase “belief in God.”
The Freedom from Religion Foundation stated on the Web site that an Ohio member of the foundation notified the FFRF about the suspect wording.
The foundation’s attorney Rebecca Krantz noted that the wording in the school mission statement is a violation of the First Amendment on the students and parents in the school district.
The FFRF is asking its members to write a letter to Lake Local Schools to address this issue. The Web site has asked those that write to be polite and concise.
The FFRF is a national group from Madison, Wisconsin that has been in action since 1978. The foundation files lawsuits and publishes literature regarding separation of church and state. The foundation’s purpose is to promote public matters relating to nontheism.
Kratz added in an action alert release on the foundation Web site, “The violation is flagrant.”
She added that anyone who is a non-believer is made to feel as an outsider because of the wording.
FFRF claims that freedom depends on free thinkers. The web site asks people to join and help fight against faith based initiatives such as Lake Local School’s mission statement.
