With leaves falling in droves, some people could use a helping hand.

Coventry seniors can be there for you. They are out helping seniors do leaf pick-ups thanks to their senior community service class at Coventry High School.

Brittani Ortscheid, Brandy Scott, Caitlin Steese and Traynell Brown went out to help a number of families for several hours in October. One of them was the house of Tom and Pam Steese.

“They called us,” Pam said. “It’s great, we are their third or fourth stop.”

Pam said she fed them as a thank you before they went to work.

“It’s a great gesture,” Tom said. “I don’t have any trees in my yard, but I blow my yard every day (because of neighbor’s trees).

“It’s nice to watch somebody else do it,” he joked.

The seniors were all glad they are part of the class, which doesn’t just involve raking leaves.

“Every Friday we usually go the elementary schools to help for six hours,” Caitlin said. “Last week we went to Lakeview to do gardening and weeding.”

The goal is to help the community in many different ways.

“We are raising money to make blankets for homeless people,” Brittani said.

“It’s a good class to take for your college resume,” Traynell said.

The class involves students doing 30 hours of experience for a B, and 40 hours for an A.

Teacher Terri Rheaume said it is an elective class that only seniors can take. There is also the Key Club, which is a community service club at Coventry High which anyone can join. There were a total of 90 students out in the community at 34 sites on Oct. 20.

Rheaume said her class is always looking for things to do and are glad to help senior citizens in the community for the hour of the class.

If anyone would like to help from these Coventry students, call 330-644-3004 ext 2268 or e-mail Rheaume at trheaume@coventryschools.org.
