The Akron Zoo is now home to a new red panda, Zheng. Zheng (pronounced jeng) is a one-year old male that arrived from the Erie Zoo.

Zheng is on exhibit daily at the zoo’s Asian Trail Exhibit. Although the zoo has had red pandas since 1999 Zheng is a different subspecies and looks distinctively different. The zoo had been home to the Styan’s Red Panda, which are typically larger and darker in color. Zheng is a

Western red panda and has a much lighter and whiter face. Red pandas, also called lesser pandas or fire foxes, are from the bamboo forests in Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces in China, in the Himalayas, and in Myanmar. Red pandas are an endangered species and there are believed to be fewer than 2,500 adult red pandas in the wild.

The Akron Zoo, which is home to over 700 animals from around the world, is open 361 days a year. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is $10 for adults, $7.50 for seniors, $6 for children (2-14). Children under two are free and parking is $2.

For more information call 330-375-2550 or visit the zoo’s Web site at www.akronzoo.org.
