It was early on a Saturday morning. There was still dew on the grass and a little fog hanging over the lake. Springfield resident Matt Thiel was spotted unloading flowers from the back of a van at the Veterans Memorial site.

Soon others began to gather, some with their morning coffee still in hand. Now the truck was unloaded and the dirty work began as they took to their hands and knees to plant the many flats of red, white and blue petunias.

These were only a few of the volunteers that help to keep the township in shape from the parks to the police department.

The Springfield Parks Board has been working on a plan to keep the township lake area looking nice with plants, flowers and trees and  keep it easier to maintain. It takes a lot of hours to just weed the beautiful gardens.

Springfield resident and botanist Norma Schweda drives by the lake area often and has seen people working in the gardens.

“I had wanted to volunteer in the township but had not planned on doing what I do for a living,” she said.

Schweda said she ran into Lowell Moss one day and had seen all of his hard work. She said he had done beautiful work on the gardens and decided to volunteer to help with the gardens.

Employees and volunteers have worked to make the lakefront bloom.

The geese are no longer causing a “walking hazard” and people are out and about using the lakefront. From families fishing and kids playing, to those walking and jogging or a person having a peaceful lunch and reading a book, the lakefront is where it is at. Many residents are walking after work and enjoying meeting friends. The daily walking and talking has even been reported to mend a few fences in relationships. So walking is healthy for the mind, body and spirit.

The trustees invite everyone to make use of the lakefront and the lake and enjoy the summer right here in your hometown.

Free Friday evening concerts run through Aug. 14 except for the weekend of July 4 and Rock the Docks weekend on July 10, 11 and 12.

If you have that little voice inside of you saying, help your community, there are many ways to do so. Many volunteers are needed to make the Rock the Docks festival a success. People are needed for many jobs. Call the township if you would like to help in some way. They will hook you up in a volunteer position that suits you.
