The board of education held its regular October meeting at Coventry Junior High.
Board President Bob Wohlgamuth began the meeting with a moment of silence for the family of former employee Marie Copen and to remember kids and staff feeling the effects of the flu season.
The board welcomed Patty Pavlich of the non-profit group “Win, Pin, or Die” which raises funds for Coventry wrestlers. She updated the board on the 5k run/fun walk/costume contest on Oct. 31 from CJH to the clock tower and back (approximately three miles). The race will start at 8 a.m. Early registration is $15 until Friday, Oct. 23 then $20 per entrant. Participants will receive a t-shirt and “goody bag.” The top three male and female runners will receive prizes: first place - $200 detailing shop gift certificate, second place - $75 Dick's gift card, third place - $25 Dick's gift card. There will also be prizes for the top in age groups and for best costumes. The levy committee is holding a pancake breakfast at the junior high after the race. The fee is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
The board passed a resolution that, should the levy fail, Superintendent Rusty Chaboudy and Treasurer Lee Weisemiller are authorized to make a cost reduction plan to reduce spenditures immediately to avoid ending the fiscal year in a deficit which is required by the state.
Chaboudy said the rumor that Lakeview is going to be closed is far from a “done deal” and much more work and research would have to come first.
The board honored the Star Student Achievers for October with certificates from the board and pins from the State of Ohio. Recognized were Coventry High Senior David Bulgrin, who has lettered in football and wrestling while maintaining a 3.6 GPA and would like to study Engineering at the University of Akron; Niki Zimcosky of Coventry Junior High will be recognized next month due to illness; Erwine seventh grader Joseph Browning, who plays multiple sports, was a Comet Camp Mentor, and would like to major in Sports Medicine at the Ohio State University; Lakeview fourth grader Gabrielle Allshouse, a responsible, hard worker who loves dancing and riding her bike; and Turkeyfoot second grader Kendall Kelley, who enjoys soccer, singing, and is the first student to have her art work professsionally framed and displayed at Turkeyfoot.
The board also approved the use of Weaver Security Shred for document shredding
