Experience the thrill and excitement of traveling through the heart of the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River in the new OMNIMAX film Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk, which premiered June 27 at Great Lakes Science Center.
Audiences are taken on an exciting river-rafting trip led by two environmental heroes, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Wade Davis. As they travel through breath-taking canyons and raging rapids, they explore issues facing the future of this iconic river and the importance of conserving our planet’s most precious resource - water. A stirring score featuring songs and music by the Grammy Award-winning Dave Matthews Band helps to set the mood for this journey that combines science, adventure and family fun to create an engaging story of how ordinary people can make a difference.
The Colorado once flowed freely from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. Today, due to excess and inefficient use, as well as the severe drought cycle facing the Southwest, the river is literally shrinking and no longer consistently reaches the sea. Water shortage is a problem that plagues the American Southwest to Africa. The United Nations predicts that by the year 2050, 40% of the world could face life-threatening shortages of clean, fresh water. Grand Canyon Adventure hopes to bring to light these issues in an effort to inspire future generations to be the turning point in this crisis and work toward restoring our planet’s waterways.
Also new at Great Lakes Science Center OMNIMAX, coupled with the premiere of its new exhibition Darwin, is Galápagos, which opened June 27. The film follows marine biologists as they explore the largely unknown waters of the volcanic archipelago and encounter its unique inhabitants. Discover the place that inspired Darwin’s revolutionary theory of evolution on the big screen, then dive deeper into Darwin’s world through the fascinating collection of artifacts found in the Darwin exhibition.
Tickets for OMNIMAX films are $9.50 for adults, $7.50 for youth, and $8.50 for seniors. Grand Canyon Adventure runs through January 31 and Galápagos, alongside the Darwin exhibition, runs through Sept. 18.
