“We're thrilled to be returning to Akron. We're going to be filming some of the most important scenes in the film, and we need the support of the community to make them work,” said Bernsen in a phone interview from Canada where he is on the set of his series “Psych” (USA Network).
The director recently finished a 10-day shoot in Taft, California which is the hometown of the movie's main character, derby racer, Trey Caldwell played by Nathan Gamble. The Northeast Ohio movie crew traveled to Taft with Bernsen and worked in the California segments.
Bernsen stated that the Taft shoot went perfectly.
“The people there really understood the importance of what we're doing for the derby and the crew was perfect,” Bernsen said “We are putting together something extraordinary.”
The movie began shooting in April at Derby Downs and the crew will be back on July 15. They will be shooting during the All-American Soap Box Derby's championship week which begins on July 19. The race finals will be held on July 24. Bernsen urges area residents to attend the event to support the Soap Box Derby and possibly appear in the film.
It will be on Sunday, July 25 that the crew will re-create the Derby championship and they will need hundreds of extras to fill the stands and act as family members. Come out and play the part of a supporter for the Derby championship for the actual derby on July 24 and the movie derby on July 25. If you attended the April auditions at Derby Downs and were chosen for the Derby scenes then you should return to Derby Downs on July 25 for the filming of those scenes. Others are also welcome to come out for that filming and further details will be released closer to that date.
The crew will also be filming at the Spring Hill Sports Complex in Green July 26, 27 and 28. It will be a race scene that will double for Sacramento. Those wanting to be extras should email treycaldwell25hill@gmail.com.

The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company offered the use of its blimp for the movie's aerial shots of Akron and the Derby.
The story of “25 Hill” revolves around an 11 year old boy that has a derby dream. Trey Caldwell receives a derby car kit for Christmas from his father who is an Army Reservist played by Tim Omundson (“Psych,” “Criminal Minds”). Before the father son team can construct the car Trey's dad is deployed to Afghanistan and is killed in combat. Bernsen, playing the part of Roy a firefighter who lost his son in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, strikes up a friendship with Trey. He finds that Roy is a former derby champ and together they begin to build the Soap Box car.
Become a part of this hometown adventure. The majority of funding for the movie has come from Akron Area investors. Much of the movie is being filmed in the area, using film crews, extras and facilities. Bernsen hopes the movie will spark an interest for families to become more involved in family friendly activities like the Soap Box Derby. The derby began in 1934 and has seen many champions race down its hill. Within the last couple of years the derby has lost its major sponsors and has seen its share of financial problems. Bernsen is hopeful that with the making of this movie it could, in some way, help with those financial struggles.
The movie got its start when Bernsen read about the struggles of the derby in an article in USA Today. He wrote the screenplay and set the wheels in motion to make this movie, “25 Hill.” The Derby will receive 10 percent of the money raised for the film and a portion of its future revenue.
