The Police Department will order two new 2008 Crown Victoria P71 vehicles through state bid. The purchase was passed during the April 16 city council meeting.
The new vehicles will complete the department's 10-car rotation to minimize the amount of wear on each vehicle.
"This will help us stretch the life of the car," said Detective Mike Korach during the committee meetings. "Rotating cars allows us to not have to buy that many more vehicles to provide the services that we provide."
Of the remaining vehicles, six cars have more than 80,000 miles on them and one dates back to 2002.
Council had taken time on the resolution at the last meeting to check whether finances would provide for two vehicles, and the resolution was passed for both cars.
For the fire department, council approved a resolution awarding a bid for re-roofing both fire stations to Tri-State Roofing for $66,796. Of that total, $56,496 covers Station #1 and $10,300 goes to Station #2. Both stations will be flat-roofed.
The City of New Franklin terminated an enterprise zone agreement between Summit County and Manchester Tool after the company announced their sale and plans to leave the community. Manchester Tool had been a part of the tax incentive program since an agreement signed Aug. 10, 1998.
"This is basically getting a break on taxes based on goals set as far as adding additional employees and capital investments," said Paul Adamson, councilmember. "They gave the tax review commission the impression that things were really good, and now they're gone."
In the April 2007 review, Manchester Tool announced that though they were not up to their proposed employee levels, they were adding a third shift and had invested $2.5 million in capital. This year, they revealed a buyer in Kennemetal Inc., along with plans to move and shut down the local business entirely.
"The county legal department is looking to see what steps can be taken to recoup what's been lost since they did not meet promises," said Thomas Musarra, law director.
The termination of the agreement is a formal move that will allow the county's law department to investigate that possibility, he said.
