St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church, July 24, celebrated the Silver Jubilee of its pastor, the Rev. Doctor Leah K. Schafer.

The church on that Sunday conducted a special worship service followed by light refreshments in the Garnes social hall.

Pastor Schafer earned a Masters of Divinity degree at Yale University Divinity School in New Haven, Conneticut. and a Doctorate of Ministry from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.  During her 25 years as an ordained minister she has served several churches.

Ordained in 1986 at Christ Lutheran Church in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, she served there until 1989. Her second call was to St. Peter’s Lutheran in Washington, D.C., where she served until 1993.

She then was called to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Springfield, Virginia, from 1993 to 2004, later serving as intentional long-term interim pastor at Hope Lutheran in Annandale, Va., and Christ the Servant Lutheran Church in Reston, Virginia, prior to coming to St. Jacob’s in 2008.

She is married to the Rev. Arthur Cubbon, pastor of St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Stow, and a retired U.S. Coast Guard officer. They have four grown children.
