The final touches are being completed on the new Summa Emergency Department at Green located at 1825 Franks Parkway at Heritage Crossings.
The project broke ground in September 2011 and the first day for patients will be at 7 a.m. July 9.

New emergency department
Summa constructed a new 22,000 square-foot free standing emergency department that will offer 14 private exam rooms and two resuscitation rooms.
Officials expect the new building to serve approximately 14,000 patients in the first year of service.

“We expect about 20 squads to use our facility, as it is open to any of the townships in the area,” Emergency Medicine physician Dr. Jeff Wright said.
Wright will serve as medical director of the ER.

Summa's new building is located just down the street from Akron General’s Medical Center, which opened earlier this year.

“Competition is good for everyone, as it keeps everyone sharp and gives people a choice of where to get their healthcare,” Wright said.

The building will have between two and four nurses on staff at all times, along with additional staff for other procedures.

“The ER will create 64 jobs and also has an additional 48 credentialed emergency physicians that will rotate through to staff the center,” said Jennifer Farquhar, public relations associate for Summa.

Services offered
The center will treat both pediatric and adult emergencies.

Some of the services that will be offered include bedside ultrasound imaging, a dedicated laboratory, a radiology department and bedside registration, which allows family members to remain with the patient as much as possible.

“We offer a small waiting room because we strive for patients not to have to wait,” Farquhar explained.

Community open house
Summa’s Emergency Department at Green is having a free community open house from 5 -8 p.m. Monday with a program and ribbon cutting at 5:30 p.m.
The event will feature facility tours, free health screenings, free first aid kits and prizes, including a chance to win one of five Kindle Fire devices and Green Family YMCA memberships.

Former professional soccer player Otto Orf will be available to sign autographs and is collecting donations of used soccer balls, shoes and shin guards for HandsOnSoccer's Project Retread.

Free car seat safety checks and photos with Summa's mascot, Stitches, will also be available. Menches Brothers Restaurant is providing free ice cream cones for the night.

Other refreshments will be provided. After, families are invited to the Green Family YMCA at 3800 Massillon Road at 8 p.m. for “Flick and Float,” a movie and popcorn during open swim time.
