On Saturday, May 30 at 8:00 a.m. out of the Akron-Canton Airport,  Honor Flight CAK (http://www.honorflightcak.org) will pay tribute again to over 100 area World War II veterans by flying them for free to Washington D.C. to see their Memorial. This is Honor Flight’s fourth free flight since 2007 and it has transported over 400 WWII veterans to date.

The May 30 flight will take 118 WWII veterans from 40 Ohio towns to see their memorials. Over 60 Honor Flight Guardians - who donate their time and expenses - will join their distinguished heroes by providing escort services and aid throughout the one-day excursion.

“Over 1,000 World War II veterans pass away nationally every day,” said Valerie Kinney, Executive Director of Honor Flight CAK.  “Our time to honor them in person is running out and now is the time to express our thanks. We serve these brave men and women of the greatest generation because they so unselfishly served us.”

All Honor Flights are a day long, free trip for WWII veterans and depart from the Akron-Canton Airport.  The round-trip flight to Washington D.C. includes a visit to the World War II Memorial and a combination of others including the Iwo Jima Memorial, Korean Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and the FDR Memorial depending on time and weather.   Each veteran is provided with an Honor Flight CAK T-shirt, hat, canvas bag, wheel chair and oxygen if needed and an escort or “Guardian” throughout the trip. †Guardians are volunteers who are family members and/or community members wanting to say thanks to those who served our country.

To date, the entire Honor Flight Network has transported over 25,000 veterans to see their memorials built to honor their suffering and sacrifice to ensure freedom for all Americans. Due to a generous $40,000 grant from the Timken Foundation of Canton, another Honor Flight is scheduled for area WWII veterans for September 12, 2009.  With approximately 500 vets remaining on their list, those veterans who applied in the fall of 2007 will be the first to be called.
