Green’s success in softball this year has become evident by now three seniors moving on to play softball at the college level.
Catcher Brittany Papp will be taking her talents with her to Mount Union College this fall, joining Green graduate and pitcher Sarah Woody, which keeps together a long-standing duo for four more years. The other Green player to move on was Jeanine Brant, going to Walsh University.
“Three of our student-athletes are going for softball, I don’t remember in all my years if three players went to the college level in the same year,” Athletic Director Mark Pfaff said.
Green softball coach Brian Tharp said he would think it wasn’t since at least since the 1980s that Green had this many softball players go on to the college level. He talked about how Papp was discovered by the Purple Raiders.
“Brittany was found by Mount Union when they were watching Sarah pitch in an indoor game,” Tharp said. “One thing leads to another, you never know when you’re going to be found.”
Papp said until that time, Mount Union was not on her college radar.
“I never really considered them until they found me in that way, but I did want to keep playing,” Papp said.
Making Mount Union College even more desirable will be an early chance to play.
“They didn’t have any catchers coming back, so there is the possibility I could be starting for them as a freshman,” she said.
Papp said she will miss the softball team at Green, who she has been playing with some members of the team long before the high school days during summer ball. She also thanked Tharp for being a helpful coach over the years.
He’s been there guiding me the whole way since I was 10,” Papp said. “He always has me slap when I’ m struggling (at the plate), I can thank him for that.”
Brittany’s parents, Frank and Erin, are glad to see the goals of their daughter going to college and play softball come to fruition.
“She’s been a great role model for her younger siblings,” Erin said. “She’s set the bar for the other four kids.”
Her younger sister Heather is currently a sophomore at Green and also on the softball team.
Papp plans to major in Graphic Design/Multi-Media at Mount Union.
