When you hear the word meditation, what are your thoughts? You may not have any idea that it is something commonly practiced in the U.S. and in Northeast Ohio. Meditation is perceived by many to be something religious, or that only monks do on top of a mountain where they sit alone with their thoughts.

“I can help you find your inner guru in Ohio,” said chuckling Green resident and meditation teacher, Eden Kozlowski. She referred to the movie just released on DVD, “Eat, Pray, Love” starring Julia Roberts. The movie is based on the book by the same name written by Elizabeth Gilbert.

It talks about Gilbert's experience as she searched for her destiny across Italy, India and Indonesia after a painful divorce. She went to Italy to find the enjoyment of nourishment, to India to find the power of prayer and to Bali to find the meaning of true love. During her travels she finds the power of meditation.
Kozlowski said you do not need to travel across the globe to find your inner peace you can do so wherever you live.

“This is not something I ever thought I would be interested in,” she said. “Now I know it is my passion and I will never stop teaching others to find their inner selves. That is what meditation is all about.”

She said finding inner peace and finding yourself is right there inside of you and that is what she is passionate about.

“This can change your life. I am not trying to be hokey. It is just learning to be quiet, that's all,” Kozlowski said.

She said she enjoys helping others to find themselves in their own backyard.
Kozlowski teaches at the Li'l Yoga Shop on Manchester Road, the Green YMCA, holds private sessions in her home and has held numerous corporate sessions including Goodyear, Wadsworth Library, New Life Episcopal Church and others. She even taught meditation in her daughter's kindergarten class.

Kozlowski has been studying meditation for 10 years. She began while working in Atlanta. She said things just were not feeling right and she felt out of balance as she was spending so much time at her job as an advertising creative director.

“I never thought I would do meditation. I realized the more I did it that it really is a way to live your life. It allows you to see your life in a completely different way because you are more aware and aware of yourself,” Kozlowski said.

She said she is not what you usually picture as a meditation teacher. She is from Statesboro, Georgia and she and her family, husband, Rick, and children Tatum, 8 and Piper, 6 after living a couple of years in Alabama followed his job at Goodyear and moved to Ohio.

“So, here I am-a girl who grew up in the deep south, in snowy Ohio teaching meditation.”

She said its great to be able to talk more about meditation.

“Now that the movie is coming out, more and more people will understand it,” said Kozlowski.

Anyone can do meditation said Kozlowski. It is learning how to quiet your mind, to walk through your day and not get lost in your day and to really be a part of your life.

“Most of us spend life worrying about the past or future and meditation is best defined as allowing you to be completely in the moment,” she said.

One of the most important aspects of meditation is the physical benefits it brings to your life.

They include; deep rest, lowered levels of cortisol and lactate-two chemicals associated with stress, reduction of free radicals, decreased high blood pressure, higher skin resistance, drop in cholesterol levels, improvement of air flow, younger biological age and higher levels of DHEAS (Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate) in the elderly.

The studies done on meditation are extraordinary according to Kozlowski.

“That is why I want it to become more main stream because it can help every person. It is hard,” she said. “It is incredibly challenging, but worth it.”

Usually, a person begins with an introductory class, four one and a half hour classes. Then, if they find they enjoy it, there are classes that meet every week.

“It is completely not what you expect,” said Kozlowski. “That is in a good way.”
