A “Hearts for Haiti” campaign will be taking place Jan. 27 through Feb. 3 at Turkeyfoot Elementary School in Coventry. The pre-school through second grade students are encouraged to stop by the “Hearts for Haiti” booth in the morning between 8-8:30 a.m. to buy a paper heart for $1. The students may write their names on the hearts and put them on a bulletin board to display. Melissa Carr, Turkeyfoot first grade teacher, organized the week-long event.

“The children were so proud to come up and buy a heart,” said Carr.

The money raised will go to the American Red Cross relief efforts for Haiti. Carr said after seeing First Lady Michelle Obama on television, she decided the Red Cross was the easiest way to donate to Haiti. On the first day of collecting, the campaign raised $75.

“Collecting money for Haiti teaches our Turkeyfoot students that giving to those in need is something you do even in hard economic times,” said Carr.
