Coventry, Ohio -

We are talking with Brenda Young, senior pastor at Cornerstone Church at 578 Killian Rd. in Coventry Township.

Cornerstone is having its second annual LEAP Week. What is that?

Well, it's one of the most exciting things that has ever happened since I have been pastor here, and that's more than 12 years. It's part of our Summer Serve program, a week when we shut down all activities that are directed towards the church family, and instead direct all of our efforts and energy toward the needs of the community.

How does that happen? What needs do you target?

It happens through group efforts, family projects, and individual action. We offer sign-ups to serve at the church and on the website www.cornerstonefmc.org for a variety of service opportunities, all requiring different kinds of commitment and skills. Throughout the week, we will be serving as teams with Mobile Meals, Habitat for Humanity, senior citizen visits, military support activities, park and home clean-ups, resume preparation, and other similar activities. On July 30, between 1-7 p.m., there will be an American Red Cross blood drive at the church.

Last year you had a huge Back-to-School Giveaway, servicing more than 600 children. Will that be part of this year's LEAP?
Yes. The biggest day of the LEAP week will be Saturday Aug. 2 from 10-3. This includes with the back to school clothes and supplies give away, hair cuts, health checks, personal care supply give away, and car maintenance. Lunch will be served starting at 11 a.m. until the food runs out and lunch is free. Everything is free. There will also be games and inflatables for fun, as well as a Teddy Bear Picnic that runs from 11-2 p.m.

Are there income requirements for participation?
No, but any child who receives school supplies must be physically present. An adult can not pick up for several children. The students need to be present to personally receive the supplies. The give-away will be divided into elementary and high school students.

Is there an age limit on the used clothing give-away?

No — any age is welcome, until the supply runs out.

How about donations or offers to help serve?
Yes. If anyone would like to donate supplies, make a financial gift to assist, or would like to participate in a service event, please call 330- 644-3937 or visit www.cornerstonefmc.org.

What's the motivation?
This is just one of the ways we are trying to put love in action. We really love our Coventry community, and you don't need to use the back-to-school give-away to drop by. If you do not have a need with which we could assist you, we'd still like to enjoy the day with you.
