Coventry  Carolyn Vogenitz has released her latest book, “Images of America Portage Lakes.” The new book celebrates the history of Portage Lakes through a collection of vintage photographs in a soft-cover 128-page format.

Her love of Portage Lakes history was piqued when she and her now-deceased husband, Glen, decided  to search for a lakefront home for their retirement years.

They looked at properties at Atwood Lake and Berlin Reservoir, but concluded that no one would come to see them that far away. In 1995, they settled into their home on East Reservoir. Her  curiosity and love of local history prompted Vogenitz to seek information that was available on Portage Lakes.
Vogenitz began her search at the local library where, to her surprise, little information was available.  She decided to delve into more extensive research and to eventually write on the history of Portage Lakes.  In 1999, she published “Portage Lakes Then and Now,” followed by a “Cuyahoga Falls Then and Now” book released in 2002.

Arcadia Publishing contacted Vogenitz in October  2010 to ask if she might be interested in their Images of America series. The book would focus on vintage photo images of Portage Lakes residents and locations reflecting its history. She compiled more than 200 photos into nine chapters. The Chapters include: Before the White Man; Early Residents; Canals, Reservoirs and Lakes; Resorts and Summer Cottages; Summer Playground; Eat, Drink and Be Merry; Making a Buck; Watercraft and Community at Large.

Vogenitz was particularly drawn to the challenge of researching more on the Portage Lakes through photos and her local contacts.

“Every person I talked with motivated me to know more,” she said, “and one thing led to the next.”
She said one of her most rewarding experiences, during the writing of her current book, came when she received permission from the Akron Beacon Journal to use photos from their archives for the book.
