Ohio Department of Natural Resources Akron Field Division of Watercraft hosted a Demo Day at Portage Lakes State Park June 28.
Officers and volunteers from ODNR were on hand to answer questions and hand out free inflatable life vests and recharge kits to those who turned out for the event.
The life vests that were handed out were over a $150 value and officers explained how to properly work the life vests.
“The Wear It Ohio campaign is a way to try to change the way people think about life jackets,” said Officer Richard Lowry.
“The event is an opportunity to invite those who don’t have the opportunity to go out on a boat to experience it,” he added.
There were about 45 life vests passed out to people who attended the event on the main beach at the state park.
Free pontoon boat rides and jet ski rides were another way those who came to the park Ocould spend some time, along with kayaking and canoeing.
