Jackson Township police are investigating a fatal crash that happened just before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at High Mill Avenue NW just south of Mt. Pleasant Road.

Police have cordoned off a section along High Mill Avenue NW south of Mt. Pleasant Road with yellow tape as they investigate a fatal crash that happened just before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Stark County coroner was at the scene.

Laurence W. Houmard, 69, of Navarre died from injuries from the crash, according to Harry Campbell, chief investigator with the Stark County Coroner's Office.

Another person was taken by helicopter to a hospital.

A mangled car was about 30 feet off the roadway in a wooded area, and a van had landed in the sidelot of a house off Radmoor St. NW in Lawrence Township.

Christine Brelin, who lives on Radmoor, said she heard a loud noise and came outside to see a medical helicopter in a nearby farm field.

“You can see the skid marks of where (a vehicle) drove off the road and through mailboxes and a telephone pole, and there’s metal pieces on the ground,” Brelin said.

High Mill is expected to be closed to traffic for several hours this afternoon.

Sgt. Jim Monigold of Jackson police said details would be released once their investigation reveals more information. He said the family of the person who died had not been notified as of 1:30 p.m.

The Ohio Highway Patrol was also at the scene.
