Traffic slowed for about a half hour as firefighters extinguished a commercial plumbing van Thursday on Interstate 77 near the Akron-Canton International Airport exit.
Capt. Greg Morgan with the Green Fire Department said the driver reported mechanical problems before merging onto the interstate from U.S. Route 62. The flames began in the engine compartment, and the department was called at 4:23 p.m.
"It was burning when we got there," Morgan said.
The driver escaped unharmed. Morgan said the van carried tools and propane tanks, which were not ignited during the fire.
All lanes were closed while firefighters battled the fire, and the far left lane was opened after 20 minutes. Firefighters had extinguished the van 10 minutes later, and all lanes were reopened by 5 p.m.
