The December Green Board of Education meeting was a chance for members to bid farewell to two outgoing members.
Board members Steve Foster and Lynn Wiggins were recognized for their service during the brief meeting. Foster lost his seat in a close election in November. Wiggins chose not to run for re-election.
The board also honored the students of the month. These included: Anthony Swank (Greenwood Early Learning Center), Brady Rychlik (Green Primary), Maggie Grizer (Green Intermediate), Kami Helm (Green Middle), and Jocelyn Claytor and Matt Stang (Green High School).
Middle School Principal Jeff Well and band director Lisa Aglioti presented a report on the Middle School band's performance at the Akron University Band Conference on Dec. 6. Aglioti also reminded the board that the band will perform at the Ohio Music Educators Association in Columbus in February.
The board approved a resolution to accept money from the county in advance of the collection of taxes in the spring. This is a common practice to help with the cash flow and represents money due to the school district. No interest is charged by the county on this advance.
The board approved the consent calendar which was composed mostly of spring sports positions. Board member Bob Campbell pointed out that this was an ongoing attempt to have coaches in place in advance of the season to help facilitate scheduling and other related items in advance of the sports seasons.
In other business, the board:
- Approved a memorandum of understanding to hire a long-term music substitute at Green Intermediate School to help bring down class sizes after two music positions were lost through attrition.
- Approved a list of schools that the district will not transport students to. In lieu of transportation, parents will be reimbursed the cost of transportation at a rate determined by the Ohio Department of Education.
- Connie Leonard discussed the "Green Card" program that is available to Green residents 55 years and older. This card allows the holder to get into a variety of school events without charge. Events covered by this card include athletic contests and theater and music performances. The cards may be obtained from the athletic office at the high school. Anyone who wants a card should stop in at the high school office to be given directions to the athletic office.
