  • Eva Longoria will make her directorial debut on this season of Devious Maids, creator Marc Cherry revealed Thursday at the Television Critics Association winter TV previews.
Longoria will helm the Season 2 premiere of the Lifetime soap, which she and Cherry both executive-produce. "After eight years of training, I told her it was time," Cherry said. "It's something she's always wanted to do."
Returning winter shows: Where we left off
Now that the former Desperate Housewives star is getting ready to pull double duty behind the scenes, the question quickly turned to when Longoria will guest-star on the hit Lifetime series. Although there isn't a plan (yet), Cherry confirmed he was interested in her popping up on screen "The Eva Longoria card - I will play that at some point, absolutely," he said.
However, he was also adamant about waiting for the right role for his former leading lady. "I told Eva, 'If I'm going to bring you on, it's something that I think would be great for you,'" he said. "Lifetime can't wait for me to bring her along, but Eva and I have to have talks about that first."
Looking ahead to Season 2 of Devious Maids, which returns on April 20, Cherry reflected back on Desperate Housewives - and its infamous sophomore slump. Cherry said one of the most important lessons he learned was "know what your second season is before you write your first season."
    Out and proud celebrities
Cherry said he was grateful that he and the writers had months to prep Devious Maids' 13-episode cable series, as opposed to the six weeks Cherry said he had to prep for a 22-episode season of Desperate Housewives. "When I did Desperate, I was just trying to get through that first season. When Season 2 started, I didn't know what I was doing," Cherry said. "I learned a lot of lessons the hard way."
Therefore, for Devious Maids, Cherry "very much plotted everything for Season 1 with an eye towards Season 2." One such plot point Cherry knew from the get-go would come up in Season 2 would be Marisol's transition from a maid to a wife with her own devious maid. "She becomes one of the employers," Cherry said. "She's moving on up but she has a lot of deviousness to deal with in her house."
Page 2 of 2 - In a twist from last season, which was criticized for depicting Latina actresses in stereotypical blue-collar roles, Marisol (Ana Ortiz) will have a white woman named Opal as her maid, played by Joanna Adler. "So she'll be reversing racism in that particular household, so we're trying to diversity a little," Cherry said in reference to last summer's controversy. Adler's character is one of several that will be introduced this coming season. "You'll see some new faces, and we'll say goodbye to some other faces," Cherry hinted.
The second season of Devious Maids premieres on April 20 on Lifetime. Are you excited for Longoria to direct? Who do you think she should play on the series?
