The Christmas and New Year's holidays make for a good time to try something new or special from the buffet table and from the bar.

A local eatery and one of the local wine bars offers plenty of suggestions for Jackson Township residents to ring in the New Year. The Christmas and New Year's holidays make for a good time to try something new or special from the buffet table and from the bar.

Two of the many local places to cozy up to the bar include Kosmo's Grille in downtown Massillon or gather with some friends at Vinoteca Wine Bar and Wine Shop in Canton. Both places offer something out of the ordinary such as soothing cocktails, special ales or a nice glass of aged wine.

Seasonal Cocktails to Shake Things Up

Kosmo's is serving up several holiday cocktails including Candy Cane or Blue Christmas martinis or a peppermint schnapps and ice cream concoction served in a hurricane glass.

"We always have several specialty drinks that are really fun to serve over the holiday season," said Jodi Taylor, bar manager at Kosmo's. "Customers can also select from a number of winter ale's including the Elevator Brewing Co.'s Winter Warmer or Leinenkugel's Vanilla Porter."

Taylor has worked at Kosmo's over 7 years and has been bar manager for over a year. She said the two holiday-themed martinis are always customer favorites.

Taylor said for those who want a special drink to make at home to bring in the New Year's, apple pie shots are fun and easy to make.

"Mix apple juice, apple cider, vanilla, cinnamon, brown sugar and Everclear alcohol and serve it in shot glasses. Apple pie shots are big sellers here," Taylor said.

Wines to Make the Season Fine

Sash Parbhoo, owner of the Vinoteca Wine Bar, said the bar has been open since 1998 and the wine shop has been open since 1992. They sell specialty wines and aged wines.

"Our wines are mostly from small producers and we sell aged wines from 1990 and up," Parbhoo said.

"We sell wines come from Washington, California, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa among others. Some of the good light wines to serve over the holidays include Rieslings from Germany, they come dry to sweat. Then there are the Chardonnays and the white Burgundies from France," he said.

Beginning with appetizers such as aged cheeses, port wines and the dry red wines work and for soft cheeses, Parbhoo said to go with the Alsatian white wines or Pinot Grigios.

For those serving roast beef for holiday meals, Parbhoo recommended Merlots or Cabernet Sauvignon or for a more adventurous wine, he suggested trying Bordeaux. For those serving sauerkraut, Alsatian whites, German Rieslings, Pinot Grigio, or Gewurztraminer wines compliment the meal.

To top off the dessert side of the meal, Parbhoo suggested German Ice Wine, sweet Sherries and Ports for chocolate desserts.

Champagne has been a long time traditional wine to ring in the midnight hour of the new year. There are alternatives that taste good and cost less.

"The sparkling wines are generally white and they come from California, Spain and Italy. They range in price from $20 to $35 and make a nice wine to drink when celebrating New Year 's Eve or day," Parbhoo said.
