The Portage Lakes Career Center (PLCC) Board of Education Nov. 21 approved a Memorandum of Understanding with its home districts – Coventry, Green, Manchester and Springfield – for the purpose of compliance with the Ohio revised code for Joint Vocational School Districts governance.
The districts are no longer permitted to send their school board members to act as PLCC board members.
Applications must be taken from the community matching specific qualifications in business backgrounds. Decisions on appointments to the PLCC board must be in made by the middle of January.
Superintendent Ben Moore said they changed one part of the memorandum stating that the president of the board shall rotate among districts
"It was agreed that regardless as to how many members one district may hold the presidency itself would rotate annually," said Moore.
Board members expressed their disappointment with the new law that requires the changes to be made.
In other business Nov. 21, the board:
- Heard an update from Moore regarding construction projects. Minor issues are being addressed by the construction company.
- Approved a one e-year adult education limited contract for Charles Hubiak, substitute instructor, at a rate of $25 per hour and a 50 hours maximum. The contract is effective through June 30 and does not include benefits.
- Accepted donations from ACS Industries and the Sterilite Corporation.
- Recognized and congratulated the students of the month. Principal Mike Kaschak helped to honor the following students: Mikaela Corbett, Phillip Herman, Clayton Hubbell, and Mason Bee.
- Joined Kaschak in congratulating the visual design and imaging students on their achievements in the Engineering Education Service Center's Fall 2013 Poster Contest. It was a national contest and two PLCC students took top honors: Junior Curtis Fridley took third place and senior Kevin Nunley earned the first-place award.
- Heard a food drive was launched at the Holiday Breakfast Nov. 26. This year, the student body has been challenged to collect 2013 canned goods by Dec. 20. A large tower of food will be constructed in the reception area and Student Ambassadors will collect spare change at lunch. All of the items collected and monetary donations will be donated to Green Good Neighbors.
