  • The Home Builders Association serving Portage and Summit Counties (HBA) held its annual Installation and Awards Banquet on Dec. 7 at Quaker Station in Akron. Scott Strayer of Helen Scott Custom Builders received the Builder of the Year award for the second consecutive year and was also named the organization's president.
Strayer's grandmother was the association's first female president in 1984 and the evening's installing officer.
The Builder of the Year award is voted on twice by all HBA members, with five finalists selected in the first round of voting and voted on a second time in a weighted format, with five votes for first place, four for second place, three for third place, two for second place and one point for fifth.
The award is based on the criteria of high customer satisfaction and strong business practices as related to trade and supplier relations.
The HBA presented seven awards at the event, including: Associate Tradesman of the Year (Adam Bey of Handle and Sons Elevators and Lifts), Associate Supplier of the Year (Brian Miller of Stoneworks) and Rookie of the Year (Shirl Matz of Certified Payroll Services).
