HARRY POTTER REVIEW: Movie review: ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1’ is scarier and better than predecessors - The safety and security of the Hogwarts school have vanished after the death of its headmaster, Professor Dumbledore (Michael Gambon), in the previous film. The evil Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) has taken over the Ministry of Magic and begun instituting his own version of ethnic cleansing on Muggles (those would-be folks lacking in magical ability for you Potter neophytes). Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), meanwhile, has gone into hiding as Voldemort escalates his efforts to kill the lad. By Bob Tremblay, MetroWest (Mass.) Daily News.

HARRY POTTER REVIEW 2: Movie review: 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I' is the perfect start to the final chapter - This is the beginning of the end of the "Harry Potter" series. No more films, no more books, the end. Thinking about that, I couldn't help but feel a little melancholy. Because of this, I really needed for this first part of a two-part finale to be exceptional. Why? Well, because I have given a lot of time and energy to this series. From the books, to the films, and even the blogs, no book series has captured my imagination more since "The Lord of the Rings." With that much invested, I wanted the series to go out with a bang, and this part of the finale needed to set all that in motion. To my surprise and enjoyment, it does just that and more. By Gary Darling, Marysville, Mo., Daily Forum.

NEXT THREE DAYS: Movie review: ‘Next Three Days’ should be locked away - Note to Paul Haggis: Just because your film is titled “The Next Three Days” doesn’t mean it needs to feel like it lasts three days. But then this jailbreak yarn is so relentlessly ludicrous that even at an hour-and-a-half it would feel labored. So imagine how torturous it gets at a butt-tiring 133 minutes. That’s what I call cruel and unusual punishment. By Al Alexander, The Patriot Ledger, Mass.

EDITORIAL: Congress shouldn't be harder to deal with than Russians on nuke treaty - It's looking more and more like the nuclear arms reduction treaty worked out between the Obama administration and the Russians earlier this year may not get a vote during the Senate's lame-duck session this month and next. Continuing to delay on this important agreement serves neither country's interests, and seems to be more about scoring political points than addressing any unanswered concerns regarding the nation's defense against its old Cold War rival. By The Journal Star, Ill.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NATION: Auburn, Cameron Newton under fire - The college football career of Cameron Newton will not have a happy ending. That’s not fact, merely opinion. But what is fact is that there are some pretty serious allegations - at least in terms of NCAA violations - against the Auburn quarterback and those who represent him. What’s also fact is that when the NCAA finds violations, and rules that a player should not have been allowed on the field, it erases things like victories and championships, which won’t be good for Newton and the Tigers, who are 10-0 and positioned to play for the national championship. NFL QUICK SHOTS: Why do teams abandon the run on third down? - My favorite NFL play as a kid was a third-down draw play to Walter Payton, Earl Campbell or O.J. Simpson. Now, even the best running backs seldom run on third down. Heck, only three of Adrian Peterson’s 197 carries for Minnesota have been on distances between third-and-3 and third-and-7. Why? HUNTING: Don't rush nature or the whitetail rut -- We say that a particular whitetail-breeding season is late, early or right on time. Funny thing about the way we think. I mean, our idea of timing or when things happen in nature are determined by our time schedule … our preconceived notion of order. By Oak Duke/ Daily Reporter.
