Diebold plans to set up a global information technology and business services center in India, expanding an operation the company already has there.
The move will affect about 200 jobs in Diebold’s global operations. The company still hasn’t determined how many local jobs will be affected, spokesman Michael Jacobsen said.
The change will allow Diebold to base its global business services and IT operations in a “center of excellence” in Hyderabad, India. Diebold already has about 80 employees there.
It’s expected to take up to two years to establish the global business and IT center. Diebold plans to maintain several regional centers that support the Hyderabad center, including one in Northeast Ohio.
Diebold has made several attempts in recent years to streamline its global business and IT services, but it has run into problems with each move. The company hopes that locating the operation in India — close to Oracle Corp., which provides software for Diebold global business operations — will resolve past problems coordinating the operation.
Company executives began meeting with employees Thursday to discuss the planned changes. Diebold has about 180 information technology employees and another 180 global business services employees at offices in Green. Some of those jobs — but not all — likely will be eliminated.
Decisions on job cuts will be made during the coming weeks. Because it’s expected to take nearly two years to get the new center established, job cuts will be made in a series of phases, Jacobsen said.
Employees will receive severance and outplacement services and have the opportunity to apply for other jobs Diebold is adding locally, Jacobsen said.
Diebold operates in about 90 countries. The new global business center and its regional center will support different operations around the world.
India is a growing market for Diebold, Jacobsen said. In addition to the IT center in Hyderabad, the company has operations in Mumbai and Goa. The company has about 1,400 employees in India who work in sales, service, manufacturing, IT and other jobs.
The move doesn’t affect Diebold’s announced plans to consolidate its local operations at a new world headquarters in Green. The company expects to break ground during summer 2013 and move 1,500 employees into the building.
Diebold expects to see its local employment increase over the next two years, Jacobsen said. The company has added 174 jobs in Northeast Ohio and currently is trying to fill a number of local positions.
