Line of Defense was playing an outdoor show at bass player David Bruno’s house and the band’s hard-rock music didn’t go over so well with a neighbor who called the police.
“The cop said, ‘You guys sound really good,’” Bruno recalls proudly. “Then it became an acoustic show.”
Formed a year and a half ago, Line of Defense went through two vocalists before rhythm guitarist Zakk Stayer revealed an unexpected vocal ability.
“Zakk’s voice had a more hard-rock feel,” lead guitarist Tony Reed says. “It really worked out for us.”
Asked to name their influences, the guys instantly name Godsmack and Stone Temple Pilots. “We play anything, from ‘80s music to hardcore,” Zakk says. Line of Defense’s traditional set closer is Billy Idol’s fist-pumping “Rebel Yell,” which Zakk describes as “the song I started singing for.”
In January, Line of Defense took second place at a band battle at Peabody’s in downtown Cleveland. “Peabody’s was packed,” drummer Mitch Stayer, Zakk’s younger brother, says. “We move around a lot. We get good crowd reaction.” Were the guys nervous? “We’re actually more nervous playing in front of two or three people than a big crowd,” Reed says.
The band also has performed at the Cleveland Agora, the Iron Saddle and Sadie Rene’s. They’ve released an EP of five original songs.
Line of Defense has a literal meaning. Bruno, Reed and Zakk were starting lineman for the Jackson High School Polar Bears, and Mitch also is a team member. The guys have organized a benefit show, Rock for Turf, to raise money for a new field surface at the Jackson stadium.
