The Timken Co. said Monday it’s finished installing a new ultrasonic test inspection line at its Faircrest plant in Perry Township that will check steel bars for any defects to ensure quality.

The company said in a statement that putting in the new equipment cost $5 million.

The line checks steel bars with diameters from six to 24 inches and bars up to 35 feet in length. The equipment looks at the bars’ internal volumes and surfaces and determines the “center soundness” of the bars.

Timken says its purchase and installation of the equipment is part of its plans to spend $40 million on building a new “high-volume in-line forge press” at Faircrest by early 2013.
