U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci once again will face an incumbent as he battles for a seat in Congress.
Renacci, R-Wadsworth, will be challenged next November by U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton, D-Copley, in a battle for Ohio’s 16th Congressional District.
In 2010, Renacci won the seat by defeating first-term incumbent John Boccieri, D-Alliance. Now Renacci is running for his second term.
Sutton is seeking a fourth term, but congressional redistricting divided her former 13th District among five others. She opted to challenge Renacci because her Copley home is in his redrawn district.
In a statement Wednesday, Renacci said he will continue using his business experience “to advance bipartisan solutions to the significant challenges we face as a nation.” Renacci said he will continue to work tirelessly to improve the economy and bring jobs to Northeast Ohio.
Sutton also said her goals are to improve the economy and create jobs. “I am running because I believe Ohio’s workers can compete with anyone in the world when they have a level playing field. Wall Street and special interests have enough representation in Washington, and we need someone who will fight for a stronger middle class,” she said in a statement.
Renacci and Sutton were the only candidates to file so far in Cuyahoga County for Ohio’s 16th District seat, which includes Stark County’s northwest corner. Although congressional primaries are scheduled for June, candidates were advised to file petitions by Wednesday’s March 6 primary deadline. At this point, neither faces a primary challenge.
The 16th District is one of three in Stark County following redistricting.
Most of the county, including Canton, will belong to U.S. Rep. Bob Gibbs, R-Lakeville, who will seek another term in the 7th District. Two Stark County Democrats, Dawn Howard of Lake Township and Joseph C. Liolios of Plain Township, will face off for the chance to challenge Gibbs in November.
The new 13th District for U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Youngstown, includes the Alliance area. Ryan, who had the former 17th District, faces a primary challenge from Lisa Regula Meyer, of Kent. Marisha Agana, a pediatrician from Howland, filed for the Republican ticket in November.
Not running, meanwhile, is Boccieri, who some thought might enter one of the congressional races or seek a local seat.
