The 10-day Greater Alliance Carnation Festival begins today with an outdoor Rib Fest at Carnation Mall.

“This year’s festival is going to be the biggest and best ever,” said Ben Favazzo, president of the event. “We’ve made a couple venue changes, the biggest one being dropping the luncheon (portion of the) style show we held at University of Mount Union. We are keeping the style show, just not the luncheon.”

The fashion show is scheduled 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 19 at Alliance High School Auditorium. Between 4 and 7 p.m. during the Rib Fest, the bands, Anchor and Oceans of Atrophy, will perform.

“We had an inaugural battle of the bands this year,” Favazzo said. “Anchor actually won the battle, but the scores were so close, we asked both bands to perform during the Rib Fest, so their will be live music in addition to food vendors and the business expo.”

The festival officially kicks off with a parade from Union Avenue to Glamorgan Street. A new queen will be crowned Sunday night.

Carnation Days in the Park begins Wednesday and continues through Saturday, featuring food, craft displays and live entertainment.

A shuttle will be available to take festival-goers from Alliance High School and other designated spots to the park. Additional activities include a pet show, nature hikes and a community Gospel songfest.
