Police Chief Harley Neftzer will leave his post after almost eight years, effective March 26.

His departure was confirmed Friday.

Neftzer expects to formally announce his intentions Monday. He has submitted a one-sentence letter of retirement to township trustees.

Fiscal Officer Randy Gonzalez said Neftzer may take a position with Jackson Local Schools. Neftzer could not be reached for comment Friday.

Jackson Local Board of Education President Tom Winkhart said Superintendent Cheryl Haschak has discussed with Neftzer a potential non-teaching position in the district. But school administrators — and the school board — have not finalized any deal with Neftzer.

“Nothing has been formalized,” Winkhart said.

Haschak could not be reached for comment.

A former lieutenant with the Ohio Highway Patrol, Neftzer was hired to replace Phil Paar in July 2002.
