The issue: Stark sheriff-elect won’t take office
Our view: It’s doubly sad that longtime jail supervisor won’t reach his ‘goal in life’

Michael McDonald has supervised the Stark County Jail for nearly 25 years, approaching his work with passion and innovation. He has been an asset to the Sheriff’s Office even longer.

We don’t believe he would have run for sheriff if he thought he could not give that demanding job his all. But as it has turned out, he cannot.

So it is doubly sad that after a long, hard-fought campaign for the job he called “my goal
in life,” McDonald will not become Stark County sheriff after all.

He notified county commissioners this week that he is not physically well enough to take the office that voters elected him to just two months ago.

He was due to be sworn in Monday.

McDonald has been dealing with esophageal cancer since 2011, but that reportedly is not the issue. Sheriff Timothy Swanson, who is retiring Sunday, told The Repository that another medical condition recently was discovered.

Under state law, county commissioners, then the Stark County Democratic Party Central Committee and, ultimately, the voters will decide where to go from here.

Meanwhile, we hope Stark Countians will join us in praying that McDonald and his family are (in words he himself used in 2011) as strong and strong-willed as they need to be to deal with this latest development.
