WHAT IS IT? Construction crews have started building a new main fire station for the Plain Township Fire Department. The building is on Schneider Street NE across from the GlenOak High School campus and next to Schneider Park.

HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN GOING ON? Planning for a new central fire station has been ongoing for several years. Construction began earlier this month. Fire Chief Donald Snyder hopes the facility will be open in September 2013. Construction crews hope to have the exterior built before severe winter weather sets in, which will allow crews to work on the interior.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN? The new location is a central site for the fire department and will serve as the No. 1 station. Equipment from the department’s station on Easton Street NE will move to the new building, as will offices for Snyder, the fire inspector and other administrative staff. The department’s stations on Market Avenue N., Middlebranch Avenue NE and in the Avondale area will remain open.
