The Cincinnati police chief says he thinks more investment in youth programs and efforts to help ex-offenders obtain and keep jobs can ease the city’s violent crime problems.
Violent crime rates have been down, but in an increasing proportion of crimes, both the assailant and victim are black. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports about 150 people turned out Monday for a two-hour city session about “black-on-black” crime.
Chief James Craig says much is being done, but more is needed. He says money spent on violence prevention is well worth averting the cost of crime. He also agrees with suggestions by some city council members that increasing rewards for information leading to arrests would help.
Councilman Wendell Young disputes calling the issue “black-on-black.” He says it’s a Cincinnati-wide issue.
