Barriers block the work area around a handicapped- accessible entrance that is being added to the former Portage Montessori school building in North Canton. A fundraising campaign by the North Canton Heritage Society is covering the cost of the work. The Heritage Society will move into the building in the coming months.

WHAT IS IT?  A portion of the former Portage Montessori school building will become home to the North Canton Heritage Society. The organization is building a handicapped-accessible entrance on the building’s northeast corner.

WHAT’S THE PROCESS?  The Heritage Society launched a fundraising campaign and raised more than $100,000 to pay for the new entrance. Local foundations, society members and the general public made donations. The Heritage Society hired local architect Kenneth Dansizen to design the entrance. Work started Nov. 1 and is expected to be finished in January.

AND ANOTHER THING:   The Heritage Society celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. It organized in 1972 to preserve and share the history of North Canton and New Berlin. The organization had used offices in the old North Canton High School, which
dates back to 1929, but is moving because the North Canton City Schools are abandoning the building.
