MessyFace do it because, well, they have to.
“Basically, it’s four people who want to do music for their entire lives,” bassist Paige Dobbins says. “It wasn’t like we held auditions. It was more like, ‘You want to be in a band? Me, too.’”
Dobbins, vocalist Erin Mason and guitarist Nick Carson are students at Jackson High’s School for the Arts, and they sing with Torii McConnell in the Jackson choir.
The band — jokingly named after Mason’s admittedly messy eating habits — was an all-girl trio at first. “We worked around Erin’s voice a lot. The lyrics came first,” Dobbins says about MessyFace’s early songwriting.
“It was just basic chord progressions,” Mason says. “We’ve grown into our songs more.”
While MessyFace has played acoustically on open-mike night at Muggswigz Coffee & Tea in downtown Canton, “it’s really hard to get shows when you’re a three-girl band with no recordings,” Dobbins says.
Carson joined the lineup in December, and debuted in First Night Akron on Dec. 31. “The sound is a lot fuller now,” Mason says.
So far, MessyFace has eight original songs. “Paige and I have so many songs half-written,” Mason says. Adds Dobbins, “I have notebooks full of lyrics going back to eighth grade.”
The four band members bring to the party a variety of musical tastes and influences.
Carson is all about AC/DC and Metallica. Mason is “indie.” McConnell is “alternative.’
“I’m emo,” Dobbins declares. “Wait — don’t put that in!”
