A Canton man, who was killed in Tuesday’s trench collapse, likely died from suffocation.
According to a preliminary ruling, the Stark County Coroner’s Office reported that 50-year-old Scott Beatty died from positional and mechanical asphyxia.
He died when the sides of a trench in the 7900 block of Cheryl Lane Street NW collapsed on him and his 24-year-old son, Scott Beatty Jr.
The younger Beatty was rescued and survived.
The elder Beatty was buried 15 feet beneath the surface in compacted sandy soil. His body was pulled from the hole by rescue crews roughly three hours after the cave-in occurred.
