A lot has changed since NOCA appeared in last year’s Repository Battle of the Bands.
For starters, they changed their name from the melodic Ding Dong to the concise NOCA. (NOrth CAnton, get it?) There’s more.
“Jon’s hair is longer than it was,” drummer Ian Murphy says. “David can grow a beard even faster than before. “Zach’s no longer single. My collarbone is broken.”
“And I’m here,” chimes in Warren Davidson, the new bass player.
“We’re still in it for the girls, though,” guitarist-vocalist David Belden says.
Oh? And how’s that working out for you?
“For me, excellent,” Belden says. “We try to collect as many groupies as we can.”
“A lot of scene girls like David’s voice,” guitarist Jon McAllister says. “The ones that wear their hats on the back of their heads.”
Asked what’s new with NOCA’s sound, Murphy says, “We do a lot of freestyle rapping. Adds Belden, “Pretty much all of us have a mad flow.”
Onstage at the Palace last year, which was the band’s second show ever, I was no nervous I didn’t really look at the crowd,” vocalist Zach Taneyhill says. “It’s not as nerve-wracking anymore.”
NOCA has since performed at Peabody’s and the House of Blues in Cleveland, Musica in Akron, and downtown Canton’s First Friday.
About his new NOCA bandmates, Davidson says, “They’re fun to play with. And all really good looking.”
