An Akron man was shopping for trees Sunday when he was shot multiple times, Police Chief David Zink said Tuesday.

The alleged shooter, Robert W. Petrone, 46, of Cuyahoga Falls, is being sought in connection with the incident. He faces a single count of attempted murder, a first-degree felony.

The victim, Kevin J. Ciptak, has identified Petrone as the culprit, police said.

Police have not released a motive in the case.

Ciptak, 46, was shot around 5:10 p.m. at a tree farm in a quiet area of Jackson Township near Strausser Elementary School. He was found in the driveway at 8785 Strausser St. NW.

Ciptak was taken to Mercy Medical Center, where he underwent surgery for wounds to his abdomen, left arm and right hand.

Zink said Ciptak, who owns a landscaping business, stopped at the farm to shop for trees. Petrone followed him. At the farm, the two men got into a “short” verbal altercation before Ciptak was shot, Zink said.

Petrone works in the construction industry, Zink said, but police do not believe the shooting was business related.

Petrone also has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, Zink said. The model of handgun used was not released. Police believe Petrone drove away from the shooting in a white Ford pickup truck with an extended cab.

Anyone with information can call Zink or Detective Danny Sturia at (330) 834-3960.
