SHOES TO FILL
TB Clinton Blossomgame became one of Walsh’s all-time leading rushers and scorers. WR Joe Morgan gave the Cavaliers two productive seasons before signing with the New Orleans Saints as a free agent. Brad Schrecengost was the best blocking tight end in the Mid-States Football Association his final two years. Aaron Forte started every game at defensive end. All-MSFA selection Eric Buchanan handled kickoffs, field goals and punts.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
Dominic Williams may have authored the best Walsh story in 2010. Pressed into emergency duty at tailback, the former defensive back led the MSFA in rushing with 1,340 yards and 10 touchdowns. SS Pat Kane led the Cavs in tackles with 101. He and CB Chris Bivins tied for the team lead in interceptions with five. LB Maurice Jones also helps lead the defense. Derrick Showell and Tim Goodman are first team All-MSFA offensive linemen who helped Walsh rush for almost 2,800 yards. Jim Shiplett enters his third season as Walsh’s starting quarterback.
TOP NEWCOMERS
Akron transfer Anthony Schrock is expected to one of the Cavs’ top receivers. Judd Ellinger will start at tight end. He played in Walsh’s two tight end formation last year. Andrew Roy moves to starting defensive end after lettering on special teams and in a reserve role in 2010. Brandon Sayles, a first-year starter at outside linebacker, recorded 10 tackles in his final two games a year ago. FSs Brett Wycinski and Tony Stover and CB Brandon Mingo strengthen the secondary, one of the Cavs’ deepest areas.
FINAL ANALYSIS
The Cavs have the look of a playoff team. Unfortunately, they will be on the outside looking in come November. Walsh is in its second candidacy year for NCAA Division II membership and is ineligible for the postseason. The Cavs will be playing NAIA opponents for the final time and aiming to go out strong, especially against national powers St. Francis (Ind.) and St. Xavier.
