WHAT IS IT? A reminder of the danger and illegality of cellphone texting while driving in Ohio.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW? Stark County Safe Communities partnered with the Canton Recycle Center at 742 Schroyer Ave. SW for the county’s first traffic safety building mural to reinforce the law that focuses on distracted driving. The mural faces U.S. Route 30 and was painted by local artist Donna Safreed.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN? As of Aug. 31, it became illegal for drivers to use a handheld electronic wireless device to “write, send or read a text-based communication” while driving. For adults, it’s a secondary offense, meaning police can’t stop a driver for the sole purpose of investigating or issuing a ticket for a violation of the law.
AND ANOTHER THING: The law is more restrictive for drivers younger than 18. It bars the use of a wireless device in any manner while driving, including for phone calls. It’s also a primary offense, so if police see a young driver using a phone, they don't need another reason to make a traffic stop.
