Only 51 of Preston Tucker’s dream car were built. Just 49 survive. And fewer even than that can be viewed by the public.
That should give you a sense of the significance of seven 1948 Tucker automobiles being on display Sept. 16 at Glenmoor Country Club for the 18th annual Glenmoor Gathering of Significant Automobiles.
In addition to those actual Tucker cars being exhibited, so also will be a movie prop car used in the 1988 movie “Tucker: The Man and His Dream.” And, according to show director David Schultz, there will be a “modern” Tucker replica on display, as well.
TUCKER, THE MAN
According to the website for the Tucker Automobile Club of America, “Preston Tucker was a car-crazy kid who hung around auto speedways and grew up to create an automobile — the Tucker — that was years ahead of its time.”
“It was streamlined, futuristic and fast — the car every American dreamed of owning, at a price most people could afford,” the website history says. “A man of endless enthusiasm, Tucker publicized his model all over the country to wild acclaim. He sold stock, set up a factory ... and then the auto industry launched a devastating anti-Tucker campaign.”
An investigation by federal authorities and a stock fraud trial during which charges proved groundless provided negative publicity that contributed to the Tucker demise. So did a lack of being able to supply enough cars to meet the public’s demand.
Such circumstances caused the car of the future to become an automobile of the past.
FEATURED AT GLENMOOR
Other cars featured at the Annual Concours D’Elegance of the Glenmoor Gathering of Significant Automobiles this year will be early supercharged automobiles, micro cars, steam-powered autos, and the Allard sports car, said Schultz.
“Leading the lineup of early supercharged cars will be a 1935 Duesenberg SJ — the legendary “Mormon Meteor,” which was raced on the Bonneville Salt Flats in the 1930s and restored several years ago to its original mid-1930s configuration,” said publicity information for the Gathering.
A motorcycle class will feature American bikes from 1928 to 1948. There also will be a display of world-class performance cars — Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, and Porsches.
Schultz said that about 4,000 people attended the Sunday Concours in 2011, coming from as far away as California and Florida.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
Although the exhibit portion of the Glenmoor Gathering is one day, the event offers a weekend full of activities for participants, including a golf outing and welcome party Friday, Passport Transport Countryside Tour and gala dinner Saturday, and “Afterglow Party” on Sunday.

Two automotive seminars will be Friday afternoon, one featuring Andrew Beckman, archivist for the National Studebaker Museum. The other presenters will be Wayne Carini of “Chasing Classic Cars” and collector Ralph Marano, who will discuss techniques for buying collector cars.
During the Concours, artists will be displaying and selling their work and three automotive authors will sign and sell their books. Modelists also will show scale model autos and engines.
